No one ever said the presidential nominating process was simple.
But it’s a whole lot more convoluted than you might think.
As PolitiFact noted, the process “can be incredibly confusing, and the arcane party structures don’t reflect how most people assume presidential selection works.”
Many voters don’t realize, for instance, that when you select a candidate in a state primary, you’re not actually voting directly for that candidate. Instead, you’re selecting a group of delegates who will go on to presumably support that candidate in the national party convention. So, it’s the delegates, not the voters, who ultimately select each party’s nominee. And that makes for some confusing, unexpected outcomes.
